Why I Grow an Herb Garden

Who grows their own spices?  Oregano, basil, thyme and mint are pretty popular, but other than seasoning and spices for food, I grow many common and uncommon plants to use for my health. Amongst the regular veggie plants and common herbs, you will see comfrey, lemongrass, amaranth, yarrow, mallow and my favorite, plantain. Herbs have been a key factor in helping me deal with a handful of skin allergies that I suffer from.Oregano

I have been battling many allergies for most of my life. I suffer from contact dermatitis with frequent flare-ups. I have learned what to avoid so that I can stay relatively clear, but there are always environmental twists. Stress can cause a flare up as well as cold weather.  Learning about herbs enough to create formulas to help with my skin condition can take dedication. Research takes a great deal of time, perseverance and passion. I have heard many times in my life that the best products or ideas come from trying to remedy a personal issue.  I certainly have this going for me.

Yarrow

I was introduced to herbs in a medical capacity in 2007. After many unsuccessful doctor visits, a family member was seen by a kinesiologist for pneumonia and was treated with herbs and flower essences. This had astounding results. I was more than intrigued and I jumped into herbalism with both feet.  I have been studying the effects of herbs on the body since.

There have been many years that I was overwhelmed by the amount of information I was trying to digest. I found myself trying to take on too much at once and having to reign myself back in.  I have learned a lot over the years. I have created many useful and effective products that I will continue to have on hand in my first aid kit.

Comfrey

Lemongrass

I continue to research herbs, their benefits, best growing practices, and ways to use or store them. I would love to be able to help everyone that needs it but I am not a doctor, and would never pretend to be able to cure an illness or disease. I have mainly researched issues related to skin problems. (eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, insect bites, stings, etc…)  I hope to make my research useful to people who would like to look at simple naturopathic alternatives to skin health.

Do you grow an herb garden too? What’s your story?

I’m headed back to the garden now……..
